Our History

Kibi Presbyterian College of Education (originally named Kibi PresbyterianWomen’s Training College) was founded in March, 1963; however, it became operationalized on the 10th of October, 1963. The establishment of the College was the result of a three-fold partnership among the Government of Ghana, Presbyterian Church of Ghana, and then Akyem Abuakwa State. The government invited the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to take up a responsibility for the management of a Teacher Training College for women at Kibi. This was at a time when the government wanted to open many new Colleges to train teachers for the expanding basic educational system of the immediate post-independence era.

Prior to this, the Presbyterian Church had had a long involvement and, indeed, played a pioneering role in teacher education. She had established Colleges at Akropong (1848), Aburi (1928), Agogo (1931), Krobo Odumasi (1944), Mampong-Ashanti (1946) and Abetifi (1952). Two other Colleges were also established about the same time under the management of the Church at Nsaba (1962) and Anum (1963).

On 10th October 1963, the Minister for Education, Mr. A.J.Dowuona-Hammond and the General Manager of the Presbyterian Educational Unit, Rev. L.S.G. Agyemfra visited the site of the proposed College and gave the final approval for its opening. Miss Martha Baehler, a Basel Missionary who was teaching at Presbyterian Women’s Training College, Aburi, was appointed the first Principal. Five tutors namely; Misses Gladys Owusu Agyakwa, Elizabeth Boye,V.V. Gyau,

Emily Kwaa and Patience Asa Atiemo were also appointed. Eighty female students were offered admission to pursue the Four-Year Post-Middle teacher training course. Ten Non-teaching staff made up of an Accounts Clerk, a Typist, two Cooks, two Kitchen labourers and four compound laborers were also employed. A Board of Governors made up of 14 eminent persons was constituted in 1964. In choosing a crest for the College, the college adapted the crest of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and substituted the palm tree in it with a lighted candle on a stand. Under this crest was inscribed the motto “Rise and Shine” which was intended to challenge students and staff alike to rise to their responsibilities no matter the challenges ahead a and to brighten the corners wherever they would find themselves.
